Governor Jim Gibbons has maintained a firm commitment to hold the line against new or increased taxes, despite tremendous pressure in Carson City to raise taxes. No matter what the issue, the easy way out always seems to be to raise taxes, and the pressure is increasing at the end of the legislative session. Republican legislators need to hang tough and stick together on this issue, which may be the defining issue of our party. You can help by contacting your legislators (see contact data below) and/or writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Here are some points you may want to make:

* Despite cries for more money, Nevada still has a budget surplus from the last biennium.
* Governor Gibbons presented the legislature a balanced budget that included record increases in education (18% for k-12, and 16% for higher education).
* Many proposals in the legislature include some form of tax increase, from raising the gas tax to taxes on trucks, to charging Nevadans more to renew their driver’s licenses. Whatever the proponents may call these schemes, they are all tax increases.
* Governor Gibbons has proposed a transportation funding plan that would take care of our congestion priorities by reallocating future growth of existing tax revenues—without raising taxes. It would allow revenues raised locally to stay local. It allows growth to pay for growth. Our citizens need to get to work, pick up their kids and get home quickly and safely.
* While some legislators have complained about the late timing of the governor’s transportation funding proposal, they have yet to bring their own ideas to the table. The Democrats complained about not being invited to the party, but they have never complained about the validity of the governor’s plan. He’s still open to ideas, but he says it’s time to stop coming up with excuses and make transportation a priority.

Among the governor’s other legislative priorities:

* The school Empowerment program, which can be funded with money the governor has already identified. Many Democrats want to use that money to pay for all-day kindergarten. Empowerment deserves a valid test in schools across the state. Your tax dollars should go to Empowerment schools.
* Our homeland security needs the backbone of a statewide “fusion” hub to gather intelligence and disseminate it throughout the state. The federal government awards homeland security grants to states which set up their own intelligence network. 46 other states currently have a fusion hub which allows two-way communication between the state and the federal Department of Homeland Security; Nevada has no such information hub.
* Funding for the Nevada Youth Challenge Program. This exposure to life skills, discipline and respect has proven to be a powerful tool to help troubled youth in other states. At-risk Nevada teens deserve the same opportunity to set their lives on a positive course.

"One ship drives east and another drives west with the same south winds that blow, tis the set of the sails and not the gales that tell us the way to go. Like the winds of the sea are the ways of fate as we voyage along through life, tis the the set of a soul that decides its goal and not the calm or the strife" -L.O. Wheeler Wilcox

It does not matter if you personally like or dislike Bush. You need to
sign this petition and flood his e-mail box with e-mails that tell him
that, even if the House passes this bill, he needs to veto it.
It is already impossible to live on Social Security alone. If the
government gives benefits to "illegal" aliens who have never contributed,
where does that leave those of us who have paid into Social Security all
our working lives?

As stated below, the Senate voted to allow "illegal" aliens
access to Social Security benefits. Attached is an opportunity to sign a
petition that requires citizenship for eligibility to that social
service. You can Agree or Delete. Instructions are below.

PETITION for President Bush:

Dear Mr. President:

We, the undersigned, protest the bill that the Senate voted upon
recently which would allow illegal aliens to! acc ess our Social Security.
We
demand that you and all Congressional
Representatives require citizenship as a prerequisite for social
services in the United States .

We further demand that there not be any amnesty given to illegals, NO
free services, no funding, no payments to and for illegal immigrants. We
are fed up with the lack of action about this matter and are tired of
"paying" for services to illegals!

Agree or Delete: Instructions to sign are at the bottom.

Dear Mr Sanson:
Reading your ANALYSIS gives perfect import that we (Bush) are running
this cotillion (this isn`t a war because it`s run on rules of sissy
etiquette) for business purposes to build up Bush`s credibility with
American and world business leaders for his stake after the presidency in
the one world order domination. Bush`s policy is apparent: Let`s make
love not war.

Think about this, Mr. Sanson, and I`m quoting you, "We`re smarter
since the Vietnam War. Our troops have the most advanced weaponry; their
training is supurb, and their leadership will not give in to terrorists."
So how come we are losing??? You don`t win a war drop by drop and
neighborhood by neighborhood. All is fair in love AND war. Give 2-3 days
warning and carpet bomb with conventional bombs (and you know the strategic
places) and you`re out in a week. At present, this is a war in perpetuity.

Your quote: "It is a tragedy to lose one life, but we are at war."
The life you mention refers to American troops. So let`s turn that
expression back to the other side and let `er rip.

After Pres. Truman authorized the atomic bombing which killed 340,144
civilians, he became a true American hero and history has him gone down as
one of the very top American presidents.

Oddly enough, I just came across this marvelous editorial. If you
haven`t read it -- please do--Las Vegas Review Journal-April 13-p.11B--What
a real war would look like-by Elan jurno.

My gratitude and appreciation for your writings and your service to our
country.

Yo Steve,

Hell of a fine article. You covered it all. It ought to be sent to Ed Lowell (President) and Keith Weaver (VP). They need GOOD publicity and this ain't good publicity for them. We should invite Keith Weaver or Ed Lowell to come out here if they want to have a boondoggle while we do all the work. I have gotten an agreement from the Coca Cola Company to provide all of their products free for our USO for life. I am wanting to go to Cox Communications and get the USO a free-for-life set of VOIP phones for free long distance calls anywhere and not only wireless router capability for nothing ($$$$) for the service members' use with his laptop (lots of GI guys and gals carry their laptops when they travel) as well as about four free desktop computers and printers for the use of these folks that are transient and between flights here at McCarran. All we need form the USO is a letter of agreement for us to press on. We have a plethora of volunteers to man the lounge 24/7 and I know we can get donated food and snacks for these young people. Hang in there and be one of our champions for this idea. Our goal needs to be met soon and there is no reason why it can't. Over and out.

VR,

Goldie

Military Trivia (UNCLASSIFIED)

You'll enjoy this from Col D. G. Swinford, USMC, Ret and history buff. You would really have to dig deep to get this kind of ringside seat to history:

1. The first German serviceman killed in WW2 was killed by the Japanese (China, 1937), the first American serviceman killed was killed by the Russians (Finland 1940); highest ranking American killed was Lt Gen Lesley McNair, killed by the US Army Air Corps. So much for allies.

1. The youngest US serviceman was 12 year old Calvin Graham, USN. He was wounded and given a Dishonorable Discharge for lying about his age. His benefits were later restored by act of Congress.

1. At the time of Pearl Harbor , the top US Navy command was called CINCUS (pronounced "sink us"), the shoulder patch of the US Army's 45th Infantry division
was the Swastika, and Hitler's private train was named "Amerika." All three were soon changed for PR purposes.

1. More US servicemen died in the Air Corps than the Marine Corps. While completing the required 30 missions, your chance of being killed was 71%.

1. Generally speaking, there was no such thing as an average fighter pilot. You were either an ace or a target. For instance, Japanese Ace Hiroyoshi Nishizawa shot down over 80 planes. He died while a passenger on a cargo plane.

1. It was a common practice on fighter planes to load every 5th round with a tracer round to aid in aiming. This was a mistake. Tracers had different ballistics so (at long range) if your tracers were hitting the target 80% of your rounds were missing. Worse yet tracers instantly told your enemy he was under fire and from which direction. Worst of all was the practice of loading a string of tracers at the end of the belt to tell you that you were out of ammo. This was definitely not something you wanted to tell the enemy. Units that stopped using tracers saw their success rate nearly double and their loss rate go down.

YOU'VE GOT TO LOVE THIS ONE....

1. When allied armies reached the Rhine , the first thing men did was pee in it. This was pretty universal from the lowest private to Winston Churchill (who made a big show of it) and Gen. Patton (who had himself photographed in the act).

1. German Me-264 bombers were capable of bombing New York City , but it wasn't worth the effort.

1. German submarine U-120 was sunk by a malfunctioning toilet.

1. Among the first "Germans" captured at Normandy were several Koreans. They had been forced to fight for the Japanese Army until they were captured by the Russians and forced to fight for the Russian Army until they were captured by the Germans and forced to fight for the German Army until they were captured by the US Army

AND I SAVED THE BEST FOR LAST....

1. Following a massive naval bombardment, 35,000 United States and Canadian troops stormed ashore at Kiska, in the Aleutian Islands . 21 troops were killed in the firefight. It would have been worse if there had been any Japanese on the island.
