To the Editor,

In a time of extreme financial crisis in the State of Nevada those most critical of the Governor and other elected officials fail to be looking in those areas most responsible for wasteful spending. The first person that comes to mind is Jim Rodgers. Rodgers continually asks for more money for education, but when was the last time he asked one of his reporters to investigate the Clark County School District and the rampant wasteful spending? In what appears to be a case of “school board gone wild”, the school district keeps its’ contractors very happy and the classrooms very empty. A simple look at any board meeting agenda, a taxpayer will see change order after change order throwing more money at the contractors who supposedly gave the lowest bid. At a time when school construction is at a halt it is very interesting to see the large amounts of cash bestowed upon the same construction companies over and over. This is just one example of waste in the school district, but it happens to come with a price tag in the millions of dollars. Mr. Rodgers, please do the taxpayers a favor and call for an investigation into the malpractice by our education administration. Once these unethical practices are stopped, then we as taxpayers will be happy to send you more money, i.e. the 2010 bond. The savings generated by stopping the boards’ wasteful spending habits will provide every teacher with more than enough supplies for the classroom and there will be no need to send home the lists asking parents to spend money they don’t have. In a June 2008 article, Brian Greenspun challenged us to take the future in our own hands and “demand of those who represent us, and who have taken an oath to help us form a better union and a better state, that they perform or get out.” Mr. Greenspun, you are absolutely right! Please put your words into action and use your reporters to investigate a system that has long been able to conduct business without any oversight. The last time any investigative reporting was done within the school district was in the 1980’s when Kathy Hanson followed landscaping crews who were drinking while working. Rodgers and Greenspun are in a position to fix education in Nevada and pull us up from the bottom of the nation. The question is, will they? Probably not. But then again we can’t be mad at them; we keep reelecting those who misrepresent us.

CAT Bus to Replace School Bus

Clark County School District Works out Busing Agreement with CAT Bus

On August 28, 2008 Clark County School Board members voted to authorize a contract with the Regional Transportation Commission to purchase Citizens Area Transit bus passes for students for an approximate total cost of $114,000.00, effective September 1, 2008, through August 31, 2009. Several concerned citizens stood up to speak about the safety concerns and the liabilities associated with busing students on CAT buses. Trustee Edwards spoke about how schools on the east coast of the country use public transportation to transport their students and recounted that when she was young she too used public transportation to and from school without incident. A problem with that argument is that she was young in the 1960’s and the times have changed immensely since then.

While completely disregarding public input and concerns, the trustees voted to approve the contract with the Regional Transportation Commission. These parents have valid arguments and concerns for their children’s safety.

On July 9, 2008 a naked man was arrested after hijacking a CAT bus at 8 a.m. He climbed onto the back of the moving bus, broke a window and climbed in. He then threw the driver off the bus and drove it roughly 200 yards before jumping off, leaving the bus in motion until a Metro officer climbed aboard to take control of the vehicle.

On July 26, 2008 five young men riding a city bus took turns punching another passenger, robbing him of his wallet. There were approximately 35 witnesses aboard the bus who stood by and did nothing to help stop the crime, not even call 911.

On September 15, 2008 a man was seriously injured after a motorist who was driving while under the influence crashed into a bus stop on Tropicana Ave, near Mojave Road.

These are only three examples within the past three months of possible dangerous activity that may take place while Clark County students are either aboard a CAT bus or waiting for the bus each morning as they head off to school. Not to mention, an all access CAT bus pass for students will no doubt increase our already serious truancy problem in the valley.

Let’s get serious folks are you happy with the “status quo” we rank 49th in the United States. I am not blaming the incumbent for this, but I look at the character of the incumbent. Not naming a school after a fallen Nevada Veteran, keeping the media away from veterans at the School Naming Committee. Manipulating the public by blaming “policy”, but one can abstain from a vote, not Janison, she voted against the men and women that give her and her families these freedoms.
Janison criticized Shutt by saying he is new and she is experienced, let’s not forget she was appointed and she knew absolutely nothing about being a Trustee until she was actually doing the job. It’s like the pot calling the cattle black. I am really tired about people that use their position to get ahead, back room deals and treats with union heads to gain an endorsement. Voting on construction companies contracts and then taken campaign contributions from them without public making a statement to the board.
We can all overlook this and say well, it’s okay. However, this person is supposed to be a role model for our children and this is what we as parents are teaching our kids. Let’s just look the other way. It’s sad to know that we place friendship with strangers ahead of the moral standards for our children. If you are happy with the “status quo” vote for this incumbent and keep your mouth shut. If not what do you have to lose with John Shutt Jr. a Las Vegas Police Officer with a degree, “hmm” is that scary or is that a fresh start for the 49th ranking school district in the nation?
Mr. Shutt is not hiding from you folks he is standing up to corruption; it’s just too bad we have to find out about this in an election cycle. Let’s stop being the voters of yesterday and go with a common name, smiling face, or someone that knows how to smile in your face and stab you in your back. Look at my user name it’s my name, I am not hiding from anyone and I stand behind Mr. Shutt and we at the Veterans In Politics International feel that you should too.

Complaint filed with Nevada Commission on Ethics against Trustee Janison

Ethics complaint filed against Clark County School Trustee Terri Janison

On September 3, 2008 Clark County School Trustee District E candidate John W. Schutt Jr. filed an Ethics complaint with the Nevada Commission on Ethics against Trustee Terri Janison. This complaint was filed on behalf of the citizens of Clark County due to Janison’s continued unethical behavior. The basis of the complaint is the thousands of dollars that Janison has taken from various construction companies and architectural firms while continually voting to award school construction contracts to these very same donors. Ms. Janison has not abstained from voting on any contract that would directly benefit her donors. In essence, school contracts are being bought and paid for in the form of campaign contributions. Most notably are the donations from Core Construction, Sletten Construction, JMA Architects, and Tate Snyder Kimsey Architects. These companies have been awarded school district contracts and change orders, which award thousands of more dollars to existing contracts, as recently as 8-28-08.

This is exactly the kind of behavior that Clark County voters have grown tired of. In a school district plagued with wasteful spending and failing test scores, we can no longer afford this reckless behavior. Another ethics complaint was filed with the commission against Janison this week for the same issues.
